NOTICE OF EXAMINATION

POSITION: Police Recruit
ELIGIBLE: No person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment as a police officer, unless that person has reached the age of 21. Applicants for original appointment examination to the Police Department must not have attained the age of 41 years on or before the date of appointment. Applicants possessing prior law enforcement certification and full-time employment with the Ohio Highway Patrol, county sheriff, city, village or township police department may receive credit for up to five (5) years service and apply for original appointment to the Police Department. The credit shall be calculated as year for year credit up to a maximum of five (5) years. Credit must have been earned within the ten (10) years prior to the examination date for which the person is applying. The credit shall apply to extend the maximum age for appointment to 46 years. All applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent thereof.
APPLICATION: Qualified applicants must register for the examination by completing and submitting an application. Police Department Application is available online at www.portsmouthoh.org under the Applications Tab. Applications must be typed or printed in ink. Completed applications must be submitted by one of three ways to the Office of the City Solicitor, 728 Second St., Room 22 Portsmouth, Ohio: 1) in person, 2) by regular U.S. mail, or 3) by FAX 740-353-0136

Office is closed for lunch 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M.
NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THAT TIME.
EXAMINATION: The examination will be conducted on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 4:00 P.M. at the Scioto County Welcome Center, 342 Second St. Portsmouth, Ohio. All applicants MUST report to the testing site between 3:30 P.M. and 3:45 P.M. Photo ID required.
VETERANS Veterans of the Armed Services of the United States who qualify and receive a passing
CREDIT: grade on the examination will receive an additional twenty per cent (20%) on the examination pursuant to state law and local Civil Service Rules. A complete copy of all DD-214 Forms must be attached to the application FAILURE TO ATTACH SUCH PROOF OF HONORABLE DISCHARGE WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION FOR VETERAN’S CREDIT.
WAGES: This position is in the F.O.P Union bargaining unit. Starting pay for this position is $16.40 if the chosen applicant has not completed schooling; a probationary patrol officer with school completed is paid $20.91 per hour during probation. The probationary period is one (1) year. Top out wage is $23.91. The City of Portsmouth offers an excellent benefit package.
Any person considered a police recruit hired by the Portsmouth Police Department shall be given credit for prior full-time law enforcement experience in the State of Ohio as if that time was served as a member of the Portsmouth Police Department. This experience credit shall only be applied to those Articles in the Collective Bargaining Agreement concerning wages, vacation, and longevity. This experience credit shall not apply towards Seniority within the City or the Police Department, or any other contract provisions in which length of service is applicable.
If any applicant for the City of Portsmouth Police Department is currently certified as a sworn Peace Officer in the State of Ohio, they are not required to take the OPOTA physical fitness entrance exam unless they are required to attend a Police Academy as a condition of employment.
A minimum score of 70% is required to pass the written portion of the examination.
