ELIGIBLE: No person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment as a police officer unless that person has reached the age of 21. Applicants for original appointment examination to the Police Department must not have attained the age of 41 years on or before the date of appointment. (Civil Service Rule 6.04) All applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent thereof.
APPLICATION: Qualified applicants must register for the examination by completing and submitting an
application. Police Department Application is available online at www.portsmouthoh.org under the Applications Tab. Applications must be typed or printed in ink. Completed applications must be submitted by one of three ways to the Office of the City Solicitor, 728 Second St., Room 22 Portsmouth, Ohio: 1) in person, 2) by regular U.S. mail, or 3) by FAX 740-353-0136 beginning January 2, 2018 at 7:00 A.M and ending January 12, 2018 no later than 12:00 P.M. Office is closed for lunch 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M.
NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THAT TIME.
EXAMINATION: The examination will be conducted on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 5:00 P.M. at the Scioto County Welcome Center, 342 Second St. Portsmouth, Ohio. All applicants MUST report to the testing site between 4:30 P.M. and 4:40 P.M. Photo ID required.
VETERANS CREDIT: Veterans of the Armed Services of the United States who qualify and receive a passing grade on the examination will receive an additional twenty per cent (20%) on the examination pursuant to state law and local Civil Service Rules. A complete copy of Form DD-214 MUST be attached to the application.
FAILURE TO ATTACH SUCH PROOF OF HONORABLE DISCHARGE WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION FOR VETERAN’S CREDIT.
WAGES: This position is in the F.O.P Union bargaining unit. Starting pay for this position is $14.16, if the chosen applicant has not completed schooling; a probationary patrol officer with school completed is paid $17.18 per hour during probation. The probationary period is one (1) year. The City of Portsmouth offers an excellent benefit package.
Any person considered a police recruit hired by the Portsmouth Police Department shall be given credit for prior full-time law enforcement experience in the State of Ohio as if that time was served as a member of the Portsmouth Police Department. This experience credit shall only be applied to those Articles in the Collective Bargaining Agreement concerning wages, vacation, and longevity. This experience credit shall not apply towards Seniority within the City or the Police Department, or any other contract provisions in which length of service is applicable.
If any applicant for the City of Portsmouth Police Department is currently certified as a sworn Peace Officer in the State of Ohio, they are not required to take the OPOTA physical fitness entrance exam unless they are required to attend a Police Academy as a condition of employment.
A minimum score of 70% is required to pass the written portion of the examination.
